Step 1 — Confirm You Need a Notary Public
Check with the foreign authority, bank, court, or employer requiring the document. Ask specifically: (a) do they need a notarised document or will a solicitor's certification suffice? (b) do they also need an apostille? (c) is a specific form of notarial certificate required?
Step 2 — Find a Notary Public in Ireland
Use Legal Index Ireland to find a notary in your county. There are approximately 50 notary publics in Ireland. Search for a notary near you, then contact them to confirm they can assist with your specific document type and the destination country.
Step 3 — Book an Appointment
Contact the notary by phone or email. Explain what documents you need notarised, where they will be used, and your deadline. The notary will confirm whether they can assist and advise you on what to bring.
Step 4 — Prepare Your Documents and ID
Bring to your appointment:
- Valid passport (preferred) — current and undamaged
- Original documents to be notarised
- Any prior correspondence from the foreign authority specifying the required form
- Translations if the notary needs to review a foreign language document
Step 5 — Attend Your Appointment
The notary will verify your identity, review the documents, and complete the notarial act. For certified copies, they compare the original and copy. For witnessed signatures, you sign in the notary's presence. The notary then attaches their certificate, seal, and signature.
Step 6 — Apostille (if required)
If the destination country requires an apostille, your notary will advise on submitting to the Department of Foreign Affairs. This adds approximately 3–5 working days. Some notaries can handle this on your behalf.
Step 7 — Use Your Document
Your notarised (and apostilled) document is now ready for use in the destination country. Keep a copy for your own records.
