PIAB — Personal Injuries Assessment Board Ireland

Most personal injury claims in Ireland must go through PIAB before court. Here is how it works.

What Is PIAB?

The Personal Injuries Assessment Board is the mandatory first step for road traffic, workplace, and public liability injury claims. Medical negligence claims bypass PIAB entirely.

How to Apply

(1) Get medical assessment. (2) Apply at piab.ie (fee: €45). (3) PIAB notifies the respondent. (4) If respondent consents, PIAB assesses your injuries. (5) PIAB issues an Order of Assessment.

Timeframes

Typically 7-9 months for a full assessment. If respondent doesn't consent, PIAB issues an Authorisation within 3-6 months.

PIAB Assessment

PIAB uses the Book of Quantum to value injuries. You don't have to accept the assessment — if you reject it, you get an Authorisation to proceed to court.

Statute of Limitations

2 years from the accident date or date of knowledge of injury.
